When I’m out on the trail, it’s a spiritual
experience and it’s so cool to share it with my dog. I feel like it’s a book that always
got something new to read. Jake’s nine years old now so a couple things that I think about
is…how strenuous is the hike? Is it something that Jake is capable of doing? How far I’m
hiking him? When I go hiking, the things I think about
to bring I load my backpack with fruits, water and I also make sure that I have something
healthy for Jake to snack on. Poop bags, obviously that’s gonna happen when you’re on the mountains.
I think it’s important that we clean up after our dogs. I also make sure I have a first
aid kit available for me as well as him. Paw protectors, when the ground is very hot, it’s
very uncomfortable on their pads, so paw protectors are a wonderful thing to have, as you need
them. I never let Jake drink out of any streams, that’s the perfect case for giardia. So I always bring a collapsible bowl and enough
water for both of us. Focus on the weather; focus on the wildlife
that you may be confronted with. Snakes our a big thing, so always have your dog on a
leash. If you have a smaller dog and you notice a red tail hawk flying above you, pick your
dog up so that the red tail hawk stops paying attention to your dog as a meal. You get a lot of people on the hike, lot of
different dogs, so it sort of teaches him as far as hiking etiquette, social etiquette,
just being around other environments I think its taught him a lot socially. And it might
sound silly but I think he finds himself a more interesting dog because he’s seen a lot
of different things. It’s been great, he’s happier. He’s a happy
dog.
