SCHOOL YEAR. JEFF: THE OWNER OF THE WILD ANIMAL PARK IN CHITTENANGO HAS OPENED A SAFARI JUST DOWN THE ROAD FROM HIS BUSINESS. OUR CREWS WERE THERE LIVE THIS MORNING. SINCE THEN, THE TOWN OF SULLIVAN TELLS NEWSCHANNEL NINES JULIA LEBLANC THE BUSINESS DOES NOT HAVE THE PROPER PERMITS TO BE OPERATING AT THIS POINT. JULIA: GETTING UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL WITH SOME OF THE MOST EXOTIC ANIMALS YOU MAY FIND HERE IN CENTRAL NEW YORK. DRIVING RIGHT THROUGH THEIR NEW HOME–AN ENCLOSURE BUILT BY WILD ANIMAL PARK OWNER, JEFF TAYLOR, IN JUST THREE WEEKS. jeff taylor: “you could see bison, elk, african antilope, wildabeast, water buffalo.” JULIA: THIS SAFARI SITS ON TAYLOR’S PRIVATE PROPERTY–IT’S JUST DOWN THE ROAD FROM THE WILD–WHICH IS CLOSED RIGHT NOW. BECAUSE OF THAT, HE’S LOST A MILLION DOLLARS–AND THIS NEW EXPERIENCE IS HIS WAY OF GETTING THAT MONEY BACK–SO HE CAN CARE FOR THE ANIMALS AND SAVE HIS BUSINESS. Jeff Taylor, Wild Animal Park Owner: “not only financial, that takes away from our overall goal of the wild. our goal here is to educate. And promote conservation. So we lost thousands of school kids that we enjoy bringing in. And being able to tell them about the need for conservation to protect the amazing animals.” JULIA: AND THAT’S WHAT MANY OF THESE FAMILIES ARE COMING HERE FOR… “Anything we can do to help out.” JULIA: PROBLEM IS….AN ATTORNEY FOR THE TOWN OF SULLIVAN SAYS TAYLOR DID NOT GET THE PROPPER PERMITS TO BE OPERATING A BUSINESS ON THIS PROPERTY. HIS WILD ANIMAL PARK IS ZONED CORRECTLY. BUT THE TOWN SAYS THIS NEW SAFARI, WHICH IS ON DIFFERENT LAND, WAS NEVER LOOKED AT BY THE LOCAL PLANNING BOARD. THE REPRESENTATIVE FOR THE TOWN SAYS THEY SUPPORT TAYLOR’S BUSINESS BUT HE JUST NEEDS TO COMPLY WITH THE RULES. jeffrey Taylor: “i”m licensed by the USDA which licenses all zooligical facilities, animal education.” JULIA: BUT THE TOWN SAYS HE STILL NEEDS LOCAL APPROVAL. TAYLOR SAYS THIS WAS AN EMERGENCY SITUATION AND HE WILL BE WORKING WITH THE TOWN GOING FORWARD. IF HE DOESN’T GET THE PERMIT, HE COULD GET FINED OR FACE LEGAL ACTION FROM THE COURTS. JULIA LEBLANC, NEWSCHANNEL NINE. JEFF: WE FOLLOWED UP WITH TAYLOR A SECOND TIME THIS AFTERNOON AND HE SAYS HE PLANS TO CONTINUE OPERATING THE SAFARI, KEEPING SOCIAL DISTANCING AND PUBLIC HEALTH GUIDELINES IN MIND. JEFF: COMING UP IN CONSUMER REPORTS AT 5:23 — WHY CERTAIN SAFETY SYSTEMS IN CARS COULD END UP SAVING YOU MONEY IN THE LONG RUN. CHRISTIE: AND MORE LOCAL NEWS AHEAD AT
